Training

Training

Training is the foundation of everything El Dorado Fire Rescue does. Whether responding to a structure fire, a medical emergency, a wildland fire, or a search-and-rescue operation, our members rely on skills that are built — and continuously reinforced — through regular, structured training. For a volunteer department, that commitment to preparation is what makes the difference when it matters most.

Why Training Matters

Emergency scenes are dynamic and unforgiving. Skills that are practiced regularly become instinct — members who train together communicate more effectively, make better decisions under pressure, and operate more safely. Training also builds the trust and cohesion that volunteer departments depend on. Every drill, every classroom session, and every certification course is an investment in the safety of our members and the people we serve.

Training serves two equally important purposes:

  • Learning new skills — as equipment evolves, tactics improve, and certification requirements change, members must continually expand their knowledge and capabilities.
  • Reinforcing existing skills — proficiency in high-stakes skills like airway management, hose advancement, patient assessment, and emergency driving deteriorates without practice. Regular repetition keeps those skills sharp and reliable.

EFR Training Commitment

El Dorado Fire Rescue is committed to providing members with meaningful, regular training opportunities. Every month, EFR offers:

  • 15 fire training hours — covering suppression tactics, apparatus operations, equipment proficiency, safety protocols, and more.
  • 2 EMS continuing education hours — structured CE credit designed to meet state recertification requirements and keep clinical skills current.

These scheduled hours provide a reliable baseline of professional development that members can count on month after month. Attendance at trainings also contributes toward the participation requirements that help keep our department strong and ready.

Additional Training Through SFCFD

As a member department of the Santa Fe County Fire Department (SFCFD), EFR members have access to a wide range of additional training opportunities provided by and through the county. These programs go beyond EFR's monthly schedule and include specialized courses, regional exercises, and advanced certification pathways. Members are encouraged to take full advantage of these resources to deepen their expertise and broaden their skill sets.
