Structural Fire
Structural Fire Suppression
Structural firefighting is the core discipline of El Dorado Fire Rescue. Our firefighters are trained to safely and effectively suppress fires in residences, commercial buildings, and industrial facilities while protecting lives and property. It is demanding, physically rigorous work that requires technical knowledge, teamwork, and split-second decision-making.
What We Do
When a structure fire is reported, our crews respond with engines and ladder apparatus to protect life, stabilize the incident, and suppress the fire. Responsibilities include:
- Rapid size-up and establishment of incident command
- Interior and exterior fire attack using hose lines
- Search and rescue of occupants within the structure
- Ventilation — horizontal, vertical, and positive pressure
- Salvage and overhaul to prevent rekindling
- Utility control (gas, electric) and scene security
- Exposure protection for adjacent structures
- Coordination with law enforcement and utility providers
Structural Fire Certifications & Training
Structural firefighters are required to meet nationally recognized certification standards. El Dorado Fire Rescue trains to the NFPA 1001 standard and supports members pursuing state and national certifications.
Firefighter I (FF I)
The foundational structural firefighting certification, aligned with NFPA 1001 Level I. Covers fire behavior, personal protective equipment (PPE), self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), hose operations, ground ladders, and basic search and rescue. Typically 100–120 hours of training plus live fire evolutions.
Firefighter II (FF II)
Builds on Firefighter I with more advanced skills: pre-incident planning, hazardous materials first responder awareness, water supply operations, and basic fire investigation principles. Required for many officer and specialist roles. Aligns with NFPA 1001 Level II.
Fire Officer I / II
Certifications for company officers and incident commanders. Cover human resource management, community risk reduction, inspection, fire investigation, and emergency scene management. Aligned with NFPA 1021.
Live Fire Training
All structural firefighters must complete live fire training in accordance with NFPA 1403. This hands-on experience — conducted at an approved training facility — is required for initial certification and is revisited regularly to maintain perishable skills.
Join the Structural Fire Team
Structural firefighting is rewarding, challenging, and serves as the foundation of the fire service. New volunteers receive department-sponsored Firefighter I/II training. Prior experience is welcome but not required. Learn more about volunteering with El Dorado Fire Rescue.
